Almina was the illegitimate daughter of banking tycoon Alfred de Rothschild. She was his only daughter and he doted on her. She married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, at 19, with an enormous dowry.
At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying mix of sumptuous banquets for 500 and even the occasional royal visitor.
Almina oversaw 80 members of staff- many who came from families who had worked at Highclere for generations.
But when the First World War broke out, life at Highclere, both upstairs and downstairs, changed forever.
I loved this book. It was written by a Countess and I got signed it by her. Lady Almina is fascinating. Who knew that Countesses could be so exciting? I sure didn’t. Everyone gave Lady Almina money so she thought she would be endlessly rich and was able to do ambitious projects. Anyone who knows anything about Egyptian History should know that the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, Almina’s husband, discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun. Hope I spelled the name right. Almina is a perfect role model for a girl wanting to be a doctor, I do not want to be a doctor. During the First World War where everyone is freaking out and people wait hoping their sons and husbands are not killed next Almina makes a nice little hospital with state of the art equipment (for back then) and well trained nurses. It is pretty amazing how a little social outcast can become anyone. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a great day!!! -annaleeliz and Buttons
