The Summer I Became A Nerd, by Leah Rae Miller — May 31, 2018

The Summer I Became A Nerd, by Leah Rae Miller

downloadOn the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader perky, popular and dating the star quarterback. But inside Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That shes a nerd hiding in a popular girls body isn’t just unknown its anti known. And she needs to keep it that way. Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shops counter uncovers her secret shes busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom Maddies whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions live-action role-playing and first-person shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is the deeper her lies become and the more she risks losing Logan forever.

Honestly, I am really sorry that I didn’t pick this book up sooner. Mandy @ Book Princess Reviews has been recommending this since I started book blogging and I finally got to pick it up. And I was AMAZED!!!! I have never read a better contemporary book. I can’t wait to read the sequel.

The characters were so sweet!!! All of them were perfect and I loved them to pieces. The story follows popular girl Maddie and her growing attraction to Logan, the nerd. This book was very character driven and I think that was perfect for it. All of the characters changed a lot over time and I loved their character arcs. Everyone was so unique and I think that everyone who appreciates good characters will love this book, regardless of whether they enjoy contemporaries.

The Summer I Became A Nerd Quotes

The plot was, as I said above, very character based. The pacing was a pretty spot on and I loved how consistent it was. A lot of things changed over the book, mainly Maddie’s idea to tell everyone about her nerd life. I really enjoyed the ending and how interesting it was, even though I thought that it wasn’t that realistic. The plot was very engrossing and I was thinking about it whenever I wasn’t reading it. Which meant that I wasn’t totally bored at school. I also really enjoyed the writing style of Ms. Miller, it was very elegant.

The setting was very descriptive. As it should have been because this wasn’t a fantasy novel. This book made me want to go LARPing and find a group of nerds to hang out with. By the end of the book, I knew the Phoenix inside and out, as well as Maddie’s house. After all,  Maddie didn’t go out very much so I would’ve been disappointed if the setting hadn’t been very good.

I loved this book so so much and I highly recommend it. Honestly, go pick it up. Thanks again to Mandy for talking about this book so much, I wouldn’t have picked this up without you. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!!!! -Annalee and Buttons

The Selection, by Kiera Cass — May 28, 2018

The Selection, by Kiera Cass

downloadSixteen-year-old America Singer is living in the caste-divided nation of Illéa, which formed after the war that destroyed the United States. America is chosen to compete in the Selection–a contest to see which girl can win the heart of Illéa’s prince–but all she really wants is a chance for a future with her secret love, Aspen, who is a caste below her.

I loved this book way more than I thought I would!!!! I thought that it would be a normal dystopian novel, but it wasn’t!!! The characters, plot, and setting were amazing!!!! I loved how unique it was!!! If you want to know my thoughts then you should read on.

The characters were astonishing!!!! I loved how unique they were. Each girl was an individual and the prince knew that. By the end of the book, I was in love with all of them and it broke my heart whenever one of them was forced to leave. I hope that those girls keep in contact with one another and become best friends in the future. This book promotes girl friendships instead of those girl fights where scandalous secrets are revealed and no one likes either girl by the end so it doesn’t really matter.

download

My favorite character was America. I know, I know, that’s an odd name. She was independent and strong and I loved how she acted when she met Maxon for the first time (if you want to know what their encounter was like then you should read the book). She was also loyal to Aspen and wanted the best possible future for him. I really liked how caring she was, even for her servants who most people who most people would forget about. I favorite thing about America was how she was kind to everyone, even those who she didn’t particularly like.

The plot was always moving forward and changing. I really enjoyed how you were never sure about anyone. Even the girls, who I loved with all of my heart, I wasn’t sure about. There were also a lot of plot twists and cliffhangers. I guessed nothing. All of the guesses I made about where the book would take me was wrong. I’m not sure whether to be proud of Ms. Cass or ashamed of myself for not guessing anything. The plot was really well done and I enjoyed the road that it took me down, even though I couldn’t guess it.

The setting was really well done. I could imagine myself in the castle (because dystopian America, not the character, is now a kingdom) traveling with the characters and exploring on my own. The way the castes were set up was kind of interesting. I am torn between being a Five, musicians and artists, and a Three, teachers. Sadly, I don’t think that there are authors or book bloggers in this future. And the past of this world could actually be a possibility. I won’t tell you what happened to make Illea the way that it is, so you’ll have to read the book.

I really loved reading this book and I highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good dystopian novel (not a Hunger Games rip off). I got the book summary from the Library of Congress. This book fills my Was Popular 5+ Years Spot for 2018 Book Bingo. Please remember to fill out my survey!!! You can find a link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!! Long Way Down, by Jason Reynolds — May 25, 2018

Long Way Down, by Jason Reynolds

downloadAs Will, fifteen, sets out to avenge his brother Shawn’s fatal shooting, seven ghosts who knew Shawn board the elevator and reveal truths Will needs to know.

This book was amazing and I can’t wait to read the rest of Mr. Reynolds’ works in the future. Especially since I am meeting Mr. Reynolds at BookCon. This book was very real. I loved how it dealt with the grief of Will. It seemed like actual grief and the desire for revenge (then again I have never had a sibling murdered so I can’t judge this very accurately). The plot and the setting were all done very well also. If you want to hear more of my thoughts then you should keep reading.

The characters were very realistic, which I thought wouldn’t be the case because this story was written in prose and I wondered how I could connect with the characters. Actually, I’m not sure what this story would have been like without the prose. It would be very different, that’s for sure. Will changed a lot over the course of the book, I liked him and the way that he talked very much. I grew attached to all of them and was quite sad when the story was over.

My favorite character was probably Will. He had to do this terrible thing to carry out for revenge and then these ghosts showed up. Will reacted extremely well. He told his story with honesty and feeling. I loved hearing about his life and his reasoning skills. He was also very good at anagrams, a skill I wish I could pick up. I liked how he talked to the ghosts and accepted them, instead of just trying to kill them, like I would’ve done. I admired Will’s accepting abilities and how he could talk to anyone.

The plot was very interesting. It took place in the time span of sixty seconds. Normally, I would be bored out of my mind, or wondering how a 300 page book could take place in a minute. Well, it can. And it can be excellent. The plot had a lot of talking and thinking. Usually, I would be bored out of my mind. But Mr. Reynolds somehow made it seem interesting. The plot was one of the most interesting contemporary plot that I have ever read. Mainly, because there was pretty much no romance. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy romance, but sometimes I get tired of it. I loved the plot and can’t wait to read more of his books.

Long Way Down Quotes

The setting was very interesting. It explained the backstory and it described the elevator very well. Of course, the elevator was the primary setting so it was described very well. It was described so well that I never want to be an elevator again, I have had enough elevators for a lifetime, and I didn’t even have to be an elevator to get tired of them. I think that was very impressive.

I loved this book very much and couldn’t get enough of it. I can’t wait to read more of his books. I highly recommend this book. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!!! -Annalee and Buttons

The Belles, by Dhonielle Clayton — May 22, 2018

The Belles, by Dhonielle Clayton

downloadIn a world where Beauty is a commodity only a few control, one Belle will learn the dark secrets behind her powers, and rise up to change the world.

This book was very good. I enjoyed it. But you could tell that there were a few flaws. The characters were very good, I didn’t really like how they were all obsessed with beauty and would give anything to be beautiful. The plot was very well done, as was the setting. I think that the characters were sort of creepy but they were meant to be, so I forgive the author. If you want to know more of my thoughts then you should read on.

The characters were very well written, they were all also really creepy. Even the characters that I was supposed to be rooting for were all fairly creepy. I liked them, they were just really really creepy. Some of the characters were mentally ill and the things that they did were horrifying. The characters didn’t really change through the book. The main character stays the same throughout the whole book. I enjoyed the way that the character’s worked with each other. The characters were really well done and I enjoyed them when they weren’t acting like they were crazy.

My favorite character was Arabella. Even though she was a very minor character when I saw her she was always very kind to Camellia. She seemed to care a lot about the Queen and Charlotte and even the rest of the Belles. She didn’t like Sophia, which was understandable. I really enjoyed how she would help the Belles in any way that she could and she would tell anything that they needed to know. It was amazing how kind she was to everyone when she didn’t have to be.

The plot was very well done. I liked how Ms. Clayton withheld just the right amount of information to keep us engaged and she would foreshadow a lot of things. She is very talented. The plot kept moving forward at a steady pace and it never sped up or slowed down. Nothing was as it seemed, which was really interesting because I kept changing my opinion on everything. I hope that the plot in the next book is as good.

The setting was very well done. I could envision myself there with the characters, working on making people beautiful or talking to Sophia. By the way, the way the people in this book worshipped beauty and would give anything to be beautiful was very disturbing. I thought that the Belles were okay and I loved how they enjoyed helping people. I enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to read the sequel.

I think that this book was very good except for some flaws, that I hope will be fixed in the next book. I recommend this book. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Heartless, by Marissa Meyer — May 19, 2018

Heartless, by Marissa Meyer

downloadIn this prequel to Alice in Wonderland, Cath would rather open a bakery and marry for love than accept a proposal from the King of Hearts, especially after meeting the handsome and mysterious court jester.

This book was very good. I enjoyed it quite a lot and I loved pointing out the characters that would later appear in Alice in Wonderland. I didn’t like the characters as much as I hoped that I would but the plot and setting made up for it. This book reminded me of how much I needed to reread Alice and Wonderland, but I’ll do that later. If you want to hear more of my thoughts then you should read on.

I didn’t like the characters as much as I thought I would. They were good, just not on the same level as the characters of the Lunar Chronicles. They were amazing characters and I loved them to the bottom of my heart. The characters in this book were normal. Average. Maybe I had too high hopes for them but they disappointed me. They did have character arcs and secrets but I just didn’t like them that much. I hope that the characters in Mrs. Meyer’s next book will be better.

My favorite character was Hatta, a.k.a. the Mad Hatter before he went mad. He was not very trusting but he knew a lot about people and his curse. He was also very funny and I fell in love with him instantly. Hatta was the only character in this book that rose above the ordinary. I think that he couldn’t have been done better for this setting and these characters. Honestly, I would love one of those magical hats. He also threw the best tea parties ever and I wish that I had been able to get to one of those as well.

download

The plot was extraordinary!!! I loved how it kept me on my toes and I never knew what was happening next. The plot twists always had me wondering what was going to happen next and hope that all of my favorite characters would pull through, even though I knew that some of them wouldn’t make it. When someone died I would start crying and wouldn’t be able to stop. Even though I didn’t like the characters as much as I hoped that I would. The cliffhangers were amazing and I loved them as well. The plot was altogether very good and I enjoyed the road it took.

The setting was very good and I enjoyed wandering around Wonderland and other places. I felt like I was there and could envision everything in my mind’s eye, even the Chesire cat (and Ms. Meyer didn’t even give him a color, so I was just going with purple). My favorite spot was Hatta’s hat shop/tea parlor. It was there that he said a very famous riddle: Why is a raven like a writing desk? I know the answer that Lewis Carroll gave but I want your answers. Write them in the comments below.

I did enjoy this book, just not as much as I hoped that I would. I recommend it to anybody who loves Wonderland and the story it tells. Remember to answer the question above in the comments, but please don’t put down the Lewis Carroll answer. This book fills the With A Whimsical Theme because there isn’t a more whimsical theme than Wonderland. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey!!! Now I Rise, by Kiersten White — May 16, 2018

Now I Rise, by Kiersten White

downloadLada Dracul seeks her younger brother Radu’s help in securing the Wallachian throne, but their father, Sultan Mehmed, has sent him to sabotage Constantinople.

This book was very good. There was lots of intrigue and suspicion throughout this book and I loved it. I did feel bad for Lada and Radu during this book, something that I thought that I would never do. Especially Lada. The plot had a moderate amount of action in it, not as much as I would have expected but still more than most historical fiction books. If you want to hear more of my thoughts then read on.

The characters were amazing. Lada got more vicious and Radu got more conflicted. Sometimes I feel bad for Radu but then I remember that he chose this life and Lada didn’t. The characters changed a lot and you learned a lot more about some side characters who you thought weren’t important. There was one death that broke my heart because the side character was so kind to one of the main characters. Ms. White was able to make me love some characters and hate others. I cannot wait to see where Ms. White takes the characters in the future.

My favorite character was Lada. She was so strong but there were some moments when I was shaking my head at her stupidity. But she is seventeen so I understand. I liked how Lada made rational decisions most of the time and the other times I could understand her motives. Then Lada got dark and I could see the person she would become. She will help Wallachia and make it a better place. She already is. I cannot wait to see what person she will become. With preferably less bloodshed then Vlad the Impaler.

download

The plot was very well done. There was more planning than I expected and less action. I enjoyed that and was proud of Lada for her restraint. Sometimes it got a little bit boring but that didn’t happen very much. The pacing was perfect and the book kept moving forward. There quite a few cliffhangers that me stop and take a breath before reading onward. Everything changed quite a lot and it was thrilling. I enjoyed the way that the motives of each of the characters were concealed until the end. And I think that we still don’t know what each character wants.

The setting was very well done. I learned more about the Ottoman Empire, Constantinople, and Hungary. It made me want to learn more about the Middle Ages and the crusades. And it made me want to travel back in time to the Middle Ages so that I could see if Wallachia was as beautiful as Lada thought that it was. I think that it was. We also learned some more of some about Lada’s and Bogdan’s past and what the future might hold for them. I think that the setting was very well done and I can’t wait to see where Lada’s and Radu’s travels bring them in the future.

As you can see, I enjoyed reading this book quite a lot and I highly recommend it to everyone. This book fills my With A MC From A Different Country From You spot for my 2018 Book Bingo. Children of Blood and Bone, by Tomi Adeyemi — May 13, 2018

Children of Blood and Bone, by Tomi Adeyemi

downloadSeventeen-year-old Zélie, her older brother Tzain, and rogue princess Amari fight to restore magic to the land and activate a new generation of magi, but they are ruthlessly pursued by the crown prince, who believes the return of magic will mean the end of the monarchy.

This book is amazing!!! Tomi Adeyemi is amazing and has made it onto my favorite authors’ list which I will buy anything from. If you haven’t read this book then read it. The characters are amazing and so are the plot and the setting!!! This book also features African mythology which I think is amazing because we don’t get to see very much of that in YA literature. If you want to hear more of my thoughts then you should read on.

download

The characters were amazing!!!! They had arcs and thoughts and friendships. But there was also a very important part of the characters and the book. This book was about family. There were two pairs of siblings and Ms. Adeyemi did delve into the sibling relationships. That is something that you don’t see a lot in YA and when you do it usually isn’t done that well. When Ms. Adeyemi wrote about the sibling relationships I was struck with my relationships with my sisters and how realistic they were. There was some romance thrown in there but that wasn’t as important to me as the sibling relationship.

My favorite character was Amari. She was a sweet and gentle girl who could also fight when necessary. I think that she’ll make a great queen one day. I think that she needs to learn how to speak up for herself more but she’ll learn. I’m sure of it. Her relationship with Zelie was amazing and it felt so real. I hope that Amari grows into a better person and becomes a great queen.

The plot was really intense and it ensnared me from page one. The action was nonstop and the planning was on the fly. But it was there and it was equal to the action. The pacing was very fast for a 500-page book. I was always moving and learning new things. I couldn’t stop reading for the fear that I would forget all of the information and not know what was going on. But I didn’t so all was well. The plot was able to keep me engaged while giving me all of the information that I needed.

The setting was very well done, even though we stayed for a very short time in each place. The backstory was amazing and I loved how detailed it was, even though we only explored three of the gods I am sure that we will learn more about the rest of the gods in the next books. My favorite part of this was that this book was based on African mythology. I think that we don’t get enough. Either I need to broaden my horizons and read more diverse fantasy or (the theory that I think is true) most authors only write about western mythology. So this book was essentially a breath of fresh air that I loved with all of my heart. You can bet that I’m going to be picking up the sequel.

As you can most definitely see, I loved this book so much and Tomi Adeyemi is now one of my favorite authors. This book also fills the MC With Supernatural Abilities spot for my 2018 Book Bingo. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

A Court of Frost and Starlight, by Sarah J. Maas — May 10, 2018

A Court of Frost and Starlight, by Sarah J. Maas

downloadAs Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, she finds that those dearest to her have more wounds than she anticipated–scars that will have a far-reaching impact on the future of their Court.

This book was amazing!!!! I have thought that ACOWAR was going to be my favorite SJM book but it was ACOFAS!!! I loved all of the characters, the setting, and the plot (maybe?). We’ll talk about that later. I loved this book with all of my heart and can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Which sucks, because it doesn’t come out until next May. Read on if you want to hear more of my thoughts.

The characters were epic!!!! I loved them all and wish that the book had been longer so that we could have more of them. Some of the characters broke my heart because of well, you’ll have to read the book to find out. This book was written in multiple POVs, Cassian, Azriel, Mor, Rhys, Feyre, and Nesta. I didn’t get Amren or Elain for some reason, and I wanted them. There was depth behind each of these characters and I loved them all so much!!!!

tumblr_p6z57og0yT1u0il5ao1_1280

My favorite character was Azriel. He was so sweet, and his humor came out a lot in this book. I wanted more from him, but that didn’t happen. He was amazing in this book, he kept up with his lessons with Feyre (when he had the time) and he was always kind to the Archeron Sisters. I also learned a lot more about Az’s past and what happened there. It made me feel so bad for him, but I think that he learned to live with it and would want everyone else to as well.

The plot was very well written. I wasn’t expecting that much of a plot but there was a plot. The cool thing was that each character had their own little side plot, besides the major Solstice plot. I loved it and was engrossed in the book from the beginning to the end. I think that the plot was pretty close to perfect, it wasn’t as good as ACOWAR, but it wasn’t terrible, I can’t think of any terrible SJM books.

The setting was amazing!!! I got to explore more of Velaris and I learned more of what happened under Rhy’s rule in Velaris. I loved that part especially. Then I learned what had happened with Tamlin after ACOWAR and it made me want to curl up in a ball and cry. I loved how descriptive it was, now I go into Velaris whenever I feel like it. I wanted more of the other High Lords, but they never showed up, nor were they mentioned. That upset me. Otherwise, the setting was amazing.

I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it to any SJM fan. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Lani Taylor — May 7, 2018

Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Lani Taylor

download (1)Seventeen-year-old Karou, a lovely, enigmatic art student in a Prague boarding school, carries a sketchbook of hideous, frightening monsters–the chimaerae who form the only family she has ever known.

This book was amazing!!! I really enjoyed it but I think that it was a little slow at the beginning. But that was minor and it was mostly to set up the world building and let you get to know Karou. World building is something that some fantasy stories neglect and instead throw some swoon-worthy romance in your face. If you want to know more reasons why I loved this book then you can read on.

The characters were very well written. By the end of the book, I missed them like they were friends that moved away. This really shows how great the characters are. I hope that they stay that way in the next book. I also really liked their arcs and the realizations that they made about themselves and how they dealt with it. It just seemed really realistic to me. I also loved the girl friendships and the forgiveness factor that was in the book as well. It is always so nice to see girls forgiving and befriending each other instead of always being at each other’s throats.

My favorite character was Zuzana. Karou called her “rabid fairy” because of her fierceness and sass. She is someone that I would want to have my back at school. She also cares for Karou deeply and would probably give her life for her. Now that is unconditional love. I hope that we see more of her in the next books. She is just so amazing and I wish that I could meet her in real life. Mainly because she would love engaging in power struggles with my teachers and I would pay good money to see that.

download (1).jpeg

The plot was very well done and engaging. It kept dropping hints and I always wanted to know more but I wouldn’t figure it out until later in the book. That was sort of annoying but it definitely kept me engaged in the book and wanting to keep reading and not stop until the end. I also think that the plot twists helped. I never saw them coming which was annoying because I like predicting things before they happen. I’m actually not that bad at it. If you read and enjoy with epic plot twists and information dropping that has you hanging on by a thread then this is the book for you.

The setting is captivating. I was lost in the world of Prague and the world of the Seraphim and the chimera. It was amazing!!! Sometimes, I forgot what world I was in and then when I had to go back to the real world I was distraught. The writing style was heavy and I knew everything that I needed to know about the backstory and the world by the time the book was over. I’m sure that there will be more to learn in the next book.

As you can see, this book was amazing and I highly recommend it. The book’s summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

The Girl With the Red Balloon, by Katherine Locke — May 4, 2018

The Girl With the Red Balloon, by Katherine Locke

downloadSixteen-year-old Ellie Baum time-travels to 1988 East Berlin, where she meets members of an underground guild who use balloons and magic to help people escape over the wall, and learns that someone is using dark magic to change history.

This book was astounding!!!! I loved it and was lucky enough to get it signed by the author. She was such a nice woman and I loved talking to her. The characters were very realistic and I loved them all to pieces. The plot was like nothing I have ever heard of before. And the setting was brilliant. If you want to know more of my thoughts then you should keep reading.

The characters were superb!!!! I loved them all to bits and I hope that they all find happiness, wherever their futures take them. I loved how all of the characters changed over the course of the book. In the beginning, I didn’t like some of them a lot and by the end, I was rooting for all of them. I also enjoyed the way that all of the characters interacted with each other. This book was also very diverse, with some Roma people and a blue haired girl. The characters are all very precious to me and I love them with all of my heart.

My favorite character was Mitzi. She was so sweet, even though she didn’t have to be. I loved her blue hair, in protest of the government and I loved the way that she became friends with Ellie and was always there for her. I wish Mitzi had gotten her own chapters, that would have been interesting. I wish that everyone had a friend like Mitzi, not the blue-haired part, but the part where she as always there for you.

The plot was very intense. As soon as you got to 1988 nothing stopped coming at you. I loved it. So, I can say that I love action-packed books in general. The pacing was quite fast, but it should be for a 200 hundred page book. There were quite a few plot twists and cliffhangers. Those always conveniently came when I needed to put the book down to do school work or go somewhere. I loved how everything came together in the end. It was quite nice, and I wonder what has happened to Ellie and everyone else.

Pink Sunrise Photo Quote Poster

The setting was very well done and I enjoyed it. I don’t know very much about the Berlin Wall, we haven’t learned about it yet in school, so this book was helpful. I loved the background about the Runners and the Shopfers. I was very curious at the beginning of the book and by the end, all of my interests were sated. By the end of this book, I found myself growing attached to East Berlin. I can’t wait for the next book!!!!

This book was amazing and I love it with all of my heart. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a touch of magic. I got this summary from the Library of Congress. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a Great Day!!!! -Annalee and Buttons
