Sixteen-year-old America Singer is living in the caste-divided nation of Illéa, which formed after the war that destroyed the United States. America is chosen to compete in the Selection–a contest to see which girl can win the heart of Illéa’s prince–but all she really wants is a chance for a future with her secret love, Aspen, who is a caste below her.
I loved this book way more than I thought I would!!!! I thought that it would be a normal dystopian novel, but it wasn’t!!! The characters, plot, and setting were amazing!!!! I loved how unique it was!!! If you want to know my thoughts then you should read on.
The characters were astonishing!!!! I loved how unique they were. Each girl was an individual and the prince knew that. By the end of the book, I was in love with all of them and it broke my heart whenever one of them was forced to leave. I hope that those girls keep in contact with one another and become best friends in the future. This book promotes girl friendships instead of those girl fights where scandalous secrets are revealed and no one likes either girl by the end so it doesn’t really matter.
My favorite character was America. I know, I know, that’s an odd name. She was independent and strong and I loved how she acted when she met Maxon for the first time (if you want to know what their encounter was like then you should read the book). She was also loyal to Aspen and wanted the best possible future for him. I really liked how caring she was, even for her servants who most people who most people would forget about. I favorite thing about America was how she was kind to everyone, even those who she didn’t particularly like.
The plot was always moving forward and changing. I really enjoyed how you were never sure about anyone. Even the girls, who I loved with all of my heart, I wasn’t sure about. There were also a lot of plot twists and cliffhangers. I guessed nothing. All of the guesses I made about where the book would take me was wrong. I’m not sure whether to be proud of Ms. Cass or ashamed of myself for not guessing anything. The plot was really well done and I enjoyed the road that it took me down, even though I couldn’t guess it.
The setting was really well done. I could imagine myself in the castle (because dystopian America, not the character, is now a kingdom) traveling with the characters and exploring on my own. The way the castes were set up was kind of interesting. I am torn between being a Five, musicians and artists, and a Three, teachers. Sadly, I don’t think that there are authors or book bloggers in this future. And the past of this world could actually be a possibility. I won’t tell you what happened to make Illea the way that it is, so you’ll have to read the book.
I really loved reading this book and I highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good dystopian novel (not a Hunger Games rip off). I got the book summary from the Library of Congress. This book fills my Was Popular 5+ Years Spot for 2018 Book Bingo. Please remember to fill out my survey!!! You can find a link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a Great Day!!!! -Annalee and Buttons
