Lives of four misfits are intertwined when a bully’s prank lands shy Virgil at the bottom of a well and Valencia, Kaori, and Gen band together in an epic quest to find and rescue him.
This book was amazing!!! I have never read a book like it, and I probably never will again. This book was so inspiring, it’s easy to see why it won the Newberry Medal. The characters were stellar and I connected with them instantly. The plot wasn’t like anything I had ever read before, so it was a breath of fresh air. The setting was written just as well as the plot, and I loved it. If you want to hear more of my thoughts then you should keep reading.
The characters were exquisite. I loved them all and I hope that the characters in Ms. Kelly’s other books are just as good. I think that the characters were all really amazing, they changed a lot over the course of the book, becoming friends and conquering their fears. I don’t think that I have ever been prouder of a group of characters then I have with these four. They make me think that we all can be heroes if we really try and do the right thing.
My favorite character was Kaori. She was so independent and strong-willed. She did a lot of research about being a physic and then she started a business that told people their fortunes (for free, of course). I admired her grit and intelligence. She was also very kind and accepting. She doesn’t care about whether people are deaf or shy, she just wants to tell them their future. She was very matter of fact (for a fortune teller) and she was instantly likable. I think that we should try to be a little like Kaori.
The plot was like nothing I have ever read before. When I picked up this book, I knew that it would be good because it won a Newberry Medal, I just didn’t know how amazing this book would be. It was very character-based, so everything that happened revolved around the characters. There were four POVs, Chet, the bully, Valencia, the deaf animal-lover, Kaori, the physic, and Virgil, the shy one. All of the POVs were very well written and I enjoyed them all equally. If you are looking for a breath of fresh air, you should probably try this book.
The setting was also amazing!!! It was so descriptive and I could picture exactly where I was, with the characters. There also a lot of stories being told in this book, and they were all told as well as the book. The backstory was also very well written. I understood the characters and the school and everyone’s relationships extremely well by the end of the book. I enjoyed this book very much and I hope that you do as well.
This book was amazing and I highly recommend it to everyone. This book fills my With A Deaf/Hard of Hearing MC spot for the 2018 Book Bingo. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons
