Sixteen-year-old Willowdean wants to prove to everyone in her small Texas town that she is more than just a fat girl, so while grappling with her feelings for a co-worker who is clearly attracted to her, Will and some other misfits prepare to compete in the beauty pageant her mother runs.
This book was amazing!!! The writing style was like nothing I’ve ever read before. It seems so raw and real and like this story had seemed from personal experience. The characters were so detailed and I connected to them easily. The same can be said for the plot and the setting.
The writing style was heartfelt and I couldn’t wait to hear more. Ms. Murphy’s style is as addictive as they come. Her style was also really point blank or flat out. She told the story as it needed to be told with no dancing around the subject. I loved that the most about her style. I wish that her style was a bit more melodic but it didn’t affect how much I loved this book.
The characters were all so well-written and unique. I loved them all so much and think that they are all great role-models for girls everywhere. They really deliver the message that if people treat you horribly for the way you look, talk, or act then you have to stand up for yourself (normally, people won’t do it for you). I was so interested in this book and after I read it I really admired Ms. Murphy for the story that she wrote and the bravery that it must have taken. Willowdean was such an authentic character and I hope that she has the happiest future imaginable. The same to most of the supporting characters. Except for Patrick. Patrick can go die in a hole for all I care.
The plot was something that I have never read before. In contemporary, I have never read a book about fat girls. No one writes them. Except for Ms. Murphy, apparently. I loved the way that I was kept constantly on my toes. I also loved that friendship was one of the main aspects of this book. That’s not usually a big part of contemporaries, either.
This book was amazing and I loved it with all of my heart!!!! I highly recommend it. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my About page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons
