Darrow, a Red in the lowest caste of society, joins a revolutionary cell and attempts to infiltrate an elite military academy after witnessing the execution of his wife.
This book was very good. I enjoyed it and I can’t wait to read the sequel. The worldbuilding, plot, and characters were all really well done and I enjoyed accompanying them on their journey. The setting was done very well and I felt like by the end of the book I could journey to that world and get on fine. You know, if I looked like any of the classes. If you want to know more about my thoughts on the book then you should keep reading.
The characters were very well done. I enjoyed them and their antics. They developed a lot over the course of that book and they made alliances and broke them. It was amazing and I loved it. The characters were also really funny. I don’t know if they meant to be funny or not, but they were to me. Darrow had a very good sense of what was right and wrong and I loved it. I was so happy that someone in this book didn’t have warped morals. I think that they were strong, independent individuals and I can’t wait to see where they will go in the next book.
My favorite character was Sevro. He was amazing and I was in awe of him the entire time. He was such a strong character, with such an ingrained sense of loyalty. I think that he was a great supporting character. I also wanted him to be in this book a little bit more. I also wanted to know more about his Howlers. I felt like they didn’t give enough detail for that. I hope that Sevro comes back in the next book as the beloved character that I remember him to be.
The plot was extremely intense and fast-paced. Sometimes I thought that it was too fast-paced and I couldn’t remember some of what was happening. The action, once it started, was pretty much nonstop. There was very little planning and lots and lots of action. I think that it could’ve used more planning, or it could have at least shown us the planning scenes. Because I know that the plans that these characters came up with cannot be done on the fly. So besides that little issue, I thought that the plot was rather good.
The setting was also done really well. I could envision myself with the characters, helping them on their quest. I think that the setting could have been a bit more descriptive but not much. The backstory and information given was perfect. It was just enough to keep me wanting to read more and learn more. And then they dropped enough information at the end to make me want to read the sequel. So honestly, the setting was done very well.
I did enjoy this book, except for the little flaws. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy a good sci-fi book. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey.
