Our Dark Duet, by Victoria Schwab

download.jpegWhen a new monster, who feeds on chaos and brings out its victim’s inner demon, emerges from the shadows, Kate finds herself lured home to face a monster she thought she killed, a boy she thought she knew, and a demon all her own.
August Flynn is a monster who can never be human, and in Verity, he has become the leader he never wished to be. Kate Harker is a girl who hunts monsters, and in Prosperity she has become a ruthless hunter. When a new monster emerges, feeding on chaos and bringing out its victim’s inner demons, Kate must face a monster she thought she killed, a boy she thought she knew, and a demon all her own.

This book was one of those books that you read, and then don’t know whether to start laughing or crying. I loved how detailed everything was and the fact that everything was there for a reason.

The writing was . . . amazing!!! I couldn’t wait for more and it described everything so well. I wish that there were more books in this series, but sadly, it doesn’t appear that there will be. If there are to be more books then please tell me. I loved the way that the book was structured (even though it took a little getting used to)!!! But there was no warning when we jumped from POVs. I can’t wait to read some more of Ms. Schwab’s writing to see if it is as good as this.

The characters were very well written and we went deeper into the inner conflicts and personalities that were not that explored in This Savage Song. We were introduced to a new character named Soro, who I found to be one of the most interesting characters in the book. I wish that we learned more about him but maybe he’ll get his own spin-off series. August and Kate were as cute as ever and I loved how they didn’t fit together when they met again. I know this is odd, but that means that they probably matured as people. And that’s what I’m looking for in characters.

There was so much more happening in this book than in the last one. The plot was super intense and I couldn’t wait to know more of what was happening. There were so many plot twists and I only predicted some of them. And there was the one. The ending. I cried so hard when the ending happened. Just, be prepared. It will ruin you if you aren’t prepared (which no one is). But the one thing that I liked about the ending was that it was actually realistic. Or at least, my sadistic definition of realistic. I was appreciative of the way that Ms. Schwab could make me think that one thing was happening when really, another thing was happening altogether.

Our Dark Duet Quotes

I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would and I hope that we continue to explore the world of Verity. I highly recommend this series. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey!!! You can find the link to it on my About page. This Savage Song, by Victoria Schwab — September 27, 2018

This Savage Song, by Victoria Schwab

downloadAs the heirs to opposing sides in a warring city, Kate Harker, and Augustus Flynn should never have met. A Romeo and Juliet-esque fantasy about the difference between good and evil and the blurry gray area in between.

This book was very good. I really enjoyed the whole book and can’t wait to read the sequel. Although this book wasn’t one of my favorites it will still hold a place in my mind as the first V. E. Schwab that I have read (but I still don’t want to read the shades of magic series). The whole book was amazing and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

The writing style was very different but also a bit like some other authors (I know that doesn’t make any sense and I’m sorry). Some things were very unique to Ms. Schwab and other things I have seen around as I have been reading fantasy and all things otherworldly. But I understand why people love Ms. Schwab’s writing and jump on her newest book (even if I’m not at that point). Her writing style was delightfully dark and I couldn’t wait for more.

The characters were very interesting. All of them were morally grey and conflicted from the first page. Which means that they all hold a special place in my heart now. I wish that there was a whole series about them but I think it’s only a duology. August and Kate were the perfect duo (but not in a romantic sense). They complemented each other perfectly and worked together as a team just like people who have been working together for years have. The side characters were very detailed and developed. I did wish that I saw more of them and I hope that I see more of them in the next book.

This Savage Song Quotes

Kate was a very interesting character. I enjoyed the chapters from her POV and I couldn’t wait to see what her next witty thought or sarcastic comment was. I wish that Kate was more true to herself though. But I understand why she couldn’t be. Kate was such a unique character and she starts a whole new category of characters. Kaz Brekker has a  category and so does June, but Kate doesn’t fit into these categories. She was also so realistic. I would totally have reacted the way that Kate did. Kate was so amazing and I can’t wait to see where her journey takes her in the next book.

The plot was one of the most intriguing parts of this book. I wish that I had read this book slower and taken notes so that I could recreate a plot like this (in style only) in my book. This book was really action-packed and intense and that was part of the reason that I liked it so much. I wish that the side characters were more involved in altering the plot and not just the main characters. I couldn’t figure out many of the plot twists but that was okay. And the ones that I did figure out were pretty big.

I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. The Spy With The Red Balloon, by Katherine Locke — September 24, 2018

The Spy With The Red Balloon, by Katherine Locke

download (1)Title: The Spy With The Red Balloon

Author: Katherine Locke

Publisher: Albert Whitman & Company

Date Published: October 2, 2018

Siblings Ilse and Wolf hide a deep secret in their blood: with it, they can work magic. And the government just found out.

Blackmailed into service during World War II, Ilse lends her magic to America’s newest weapon, the atom bomb, while Wolf goes behind enemy lines to sabotage Germany’s nuclear program. It’s a dangerous mission, but if Hitler were to create the bomb first, the results would be catastrophic.

When Wolf’s plane is shot down, his entire mission is thrown into jeopardy. Wolf needs Ilse’s help to develop the magic that will keep him alive, but with a spy afoot in Ilse’s laboratory, the letters she sends to Wolf begin to look treasonous. Can Ilse prove her loyalty—and find a way to help her brother—before their time runs out?

This book was provided to me by Edelweiss. None of my thoughts have been influenced in any way. All opinions are entirely my own.

This book was just as good as it’s companion novel, The Girl With The Red Balloon. I loved how realistic this book was and how it made the magic seem possible. The writing style was brilliant and I can’ t wait to read more by Ms. Locke. The characters were also very well written and I loved them with all of my heart. The plot was very intense and I was kept on the edge of my seat the whole book.

The writing style was very beautiful and addictive. I couldn’t wait to read more of it. I hope that Ms. Locke writes more YA so that I can read more of her lovely writing style. I think that Ms. Locke is very talented and I loved the way that she wrote her tale. I loved the way that Ms. Locke wrote dialogue and I can’t wait to read more about it in her next book. I can’t wait to be encompassed by Ms. Locke’s writing style again.

The characters were so realistic!!! I loved them all so much and their little quirks were so adorable. Ilse was such a tough girl and she will go on to do great things. Wolf was such a sweetheart and I think that he needed a happy ending more than anyone else. The side characters were also amazing and no detail was spared on them. I hope that we get a third book highlighting the backstories of some of them.

Go Training With Us

The cameos and backstories explained in this book were amazing!!!! I was so invested in them and could not wait until the final reveal. I learned how Zerberus was invented and I saw some people from The Girl With The Red Balloon. It was very satisfying. I would suggest reading The Girl With The Red Balloon before The Spy With The Red Balloon although you could read The Spy With The Red Balloon first. The cameos didn’t appear very much, or for very long, but I couldn’t wait until my next glimpse of these special characters.

The plot was very unique and well written. There were two POVs and both were written equally well. I loved how well Ms. Locke divided the action and the planning. It was brilliant!!! I can’t wait to read the next book written by Ms. Locke and be immersed in yet another epic plot.

This book was amazing and I highly recommend it and it’s companion novel, The Girl With The Red Balloon. I got the summary from the publisher. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my About page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

The Scavenger, by J. L. Willow — September 21, 2018

The Scavenger, by J. L. Willow

downloadWhen a number of teen drug overdoses disturbs the NYPD, an investigation is quickly formed to uncover the forces behind it. Four people with no previous connection find themselves the object of scrutiny as the case moves forward.

Catherine is a freshman living an unfulfilled high school life. After a gentle nudge from her best friend Eve, she begins searching for more. A boy named Samuel may be the answer to what she’s looking for, but not everything is as it seems.

Samuel has more connections to the investigation in more ways than Catherine realizes and carries more secrets than he cares to admit. His decision to take a risky bet with a man named Frank seems like easy money but instead causes his life to quickly unravel.

Frank is a drug dealer living in New York City, best known for his heinously addictive strains of laced marijuana. With the NYPD closing in and pressure slowly building, he discovers the life he’s carefully built for himself in danger of collapse.

Nathan Tawallis of the NYPD is lead investigator of the case. Much as he tries to ignore it, long forgotten memories begin to surface and past connections to the drug network become hard to ignore.

With lives becoming inexorably entangled, The Scavenger weaves a tale of suspense and family in unsuspecting places while simultaneously delving into the dangers and alarming nature of the illegal drug trade.

This book was very good. But when you think about this book being written by a seventeen-year-old this book turns from very good to amazing. I don’t normally pick up books like this but after learning who wrote it, I had to give it a try. Everything was great, although there were a few things that I think she was too young to write. All in all, I really enjoyed this book and hope that I can read more of Ms. Willow’s in the future.

My one problem with this book was that Ms. Willow seemed to be a bit young to write some of these scenes. Like the interrogation scenes. They were really intriguing and I was still invested in the story, they just weren’t written . . . well. I wanted to love them and get invested, but I couldn’t. Otherwise, this book was great.

The characters were very very different from the characters that I’ve normally read. Remember, I read fantasy. Catherine was exactly what I’d expect from a freshmen high school girl bored with her life. Samuel was the perfect conflicted child with impulse control. Frank was the character that I loved to hate and I just wanted to give Nathan a hug and some chocolate. All of them were more than they seemed and I hope that all of them have the future they deserve.

The Scavenger Quotes

The plot was also very very different from the books that I normally read. I loved it though. I have never read a book about drugs and drug abuse. This book seemed realistic to me, but I have never experienced any of these situations. I appreciated the amount of research that went into this book because it made the story way more interesting and I loved that. I couldn’t wait for what would happen next and I surprised at every plot twist.

All in all, I loved this book and highly recommend it. I was lucky enough to meet Ms. Willow in person and she is amazing!!! All of my opinions and thoughts are my own and were not influenced in any way. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Always And Forever, Lara Jean, by Jenny Han — September 18, 2018

Always And Forever, Lara Jean, by Jenny Han

downloadAs high school ends, Lara Jean looks forward to her father’s remarriage and seeing her sister, but she must choose a college, prepare to leave home, and possibly leave her beloved Peter behind.

This book was the perfect ending to the Lara Jean series. I wish I had picked up this series earlier. I loved how open-ended it left the ending and how realistic it was. I understand who people love this series and its author. I will definitely try to pick up more of her books in the future. My opinion is wholly my own and has not been influenced in any way.

The writing style was, as usual, magnificent!!! I loved how unique it was and how it stood out in the big pile of contemporary books. I loved how lyrical this book was and I couldn’t wait for more. At the same time, Ms. Han’s writing style never changed. It got old pretty fast. I wish her style changed at least a little bit so that I was kept on my toes.

The characters were also very well written. We weren’t introduced to anyone new, but we delved deeper into the personalities of everyone. Lara Jean and Peter are still my Number One Contemporary OTP, and I don’t think that will change for a while. The side characters were amazing and just as fleshed out as the main characters. I do still wish that we met someone new, though.

The family relationship was perfect, as always. It was so real and sweet. The sister relationships are so much better then what I have with my siblings. I loved all of the family, the new and the old. It made me wish that I was of a part of the Covey family (not that I hate my family, or anything, they’re all great). Everyone was so inclusive and even though Mr. Covey would get concerned and protective at times, he still loved his daughters and cared for them quite a lot. He would only do what was best for them and I really admired that. Lara Jean was really lucky to have a family like that.

Always And Forever, Lara Jean Quotes

The plot was also really delightful!!! It was different from all of the other Lara Jean novels and I liked that. It was like a breath of fresh air. A love like Lara Jean’s and Peter’s is perfect and they will get married and be happy together. They deserve to have their story immortalized in books. I loved how the plot always kept me on my toes. There were a lot of firsts in this book. First . . . I won’t tell you, read the book. I loved how this series featured an Asian main character, I haven’t found many contemporaries with that, but I’m working on it.

I loved this book so much and I’m so sad because it’s the end of Lara Jean’s and Peter’s written story. I highly recommend this whole series. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

P.S. I Still Love You, by Jenny Han — September 14, 2018

P.S. I Still Love You, by Jenny Han

downloadLara Jean didn’t expect to really fall for Peter. She and Peter were just pretending. Except suddenly they weren’t. Now Lara Jean is more confused than ever. When another boy from her past returns to her life, Lara Jean’s feelings for him return too. Can a girl be in love with two boys at once?

This book was really well-written!!! I loved how Lara Jean was portrayed and how the relationship with Peter was shown. The book explained a lot of questions that were left unanswered from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Most of the plot holes were filled in and those that weren’t were left open for good reasons that you will understand only if you read the book.

The writing style was genius and I loved it so much. Ms. Han’s style was so addictive and it made me want to read the whole book in one sitting (which I couldn’t do). It was so lyrical and the dialogue was really really well written. I always remember why I enjoy reading contemporaries when I read Ms. Han’s books. The romances are always so real and I always feel so invested in the story. This is really pushing me to read her Summer series.

The characters were amazing and I loved them all so much by the end of the book. I learned way more about the back stories of everyone and how they were all correlated and that made me realize that I had been hating characters that I shouldn’t have been and that some characters might look like dirtbags but are actually really kind and caring. By the end of this book, I just wanted to take the characters from Ms. Han and give them all a hug. I hope that they all get a happy ending in the next book.

The sister relationship was epic!!! I still have yet to see a more realistic family relationship than the Covey family. The sister relationships mirror my own family relationships so well that sometimes I had to check the last name. All of the sisters looked out for each other in public and fought in private. Everyone in the family was amazing and I want Mr. Covey to find out that Ms. Rothschild is the woman for him so that they can get married and be happy together.

P.S. I Still Love You Quotes

The plot was really well written and I quickly grew obsessed with what would happen to Lara Jean and Peter next. And a lot of things happened. There were so many plot twists that I never knew what would happen next. I loved that, but I also kind of hated it. I wish that I was able to figure some things out but it is good that I was kept on my toes. I wish that the plot had some magic in it, but love is a kind of magic all on its own, right?

This book was great and I really enjoyed it and am so glad that I have the sequel. I highly recommend the first two books in the series (I haven’t read the last book so I can’t recommend it). I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

The Young Elites, by Marie Lu — September 11, 2018

The Young Elites, by Marie Lu

downloadAdelina Amouteru survived the blood fever, a deadly illness that killed many but left others with strange markings and supernatural abilities. Cast out by her family, Adelina joins the secret society of the Young Elites and discovers her own dangerous abilities.

This book was amazing!!! I was really shocked that Ms. Lu could switch so easily from dystopian to fantasy. It was so well-written and I was addicted from page one. I loved the characters, plot, and writing style just as well as I loved the rest of her books. My opinion is my own and has not been affected in any way.

The writing style was genius!!! As always, Ms. Lu manages to take me by storm and get me hooked on the book from page one. The writing style was smooth and very experienced. I wish that I have the rest of the series but I don’t. If you’re going to read this series be prepared, it’s addictive.

The characters were brilliant!!! Adelina and the rest of the Young Elites were so well-written that I half expected to see one of them walking around when I had to put down the book. The Dagger Society was an epic squad and I hope that there is more of them in the next book. All of the characters changed a lot over the course of the book and I loved them all so much by the end of the book. That made the ending so much worse, though.

Adelina was amazing!!! She was one of the best morally grey characters that I’ve ever read (she’s tied for first place with Kaz Brekker). I cannot wait to see where her journey takes her and I hope that she eventually claims the throne and runs the world with her sister, Victoria.

The Young Elites Quotes

Also, the sister love in this book was phenomenal!!! The girls were actually looking out for each other and helping each other out. I wish that we had more sister love like this in contemporaries and fantasies. It would send the message to girls that we’re supposed to build each other up, not tear each other down. I am surprised that The Young Elites isn’t more popular just for this reason alone.

The plot was also very well written and it also ripped my heart into small little pieces. By the end of the book, I was just staring off into space blankly, trying to figure out what just happened. I wanted to cry and throw the book at the wall sometimes (not because it was bad but because I was overrun with emotion) but I couldn’t because the book was signed. I loved everything about the book and the plot twists were genius. I didn’t predict any of them. I wish I did, but I didn’t. If you read books for the plot then this is the book for you.

All in all, I really loved this book and I highly recommend it, just like the rest of Ms. Lu’s books. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

Windwitch, by Susan Dennard — September 10, 2018

Windwitch, by Susan Dennard

download (1)After an explosion ruins his ship, Prince Merik tries to expose his sister’s treachery while fighting for the weak on the streets of the royal capital. Meanwhile, Aeduan, a Bloodwitch, and Iseult, a Threadwitch, form an unlikely alliance and travel together looking for Safiya, who has been shipwrecked with the Empress of Marstok in a land of pirates and is living every moment balanced on a knife’s edge, trying to keep the pirates from unleashing war upon the Witchlands.

This book was amazing and I loved it!!! I couldn’t stop reading it and I was addicted. Sadly, I couldn’t read this all in one sitting. I loved the characters, plot, and writing style and can’t wait to read Ms. Dennard’s next book, Sightwitch.

I loved Ms. Dennard’s writing style and can’t wait for more of it. Her style was very addictive and I was engrossed in her book from when I read the first page. I loved Ms. Dennard’s amusing dialogue and how well she described the setting. Ms. Dennard described the setting beautifully, and I could imagine myself there, talking with the characters. I loved how Ms. Dennard wrote with humor and an optimistic nature, it was well suited for this book.

The characters were much more relatable in this book then they were in Truthwitch. I related to most of them and hope that they have the best future imaginable, but for that to happen, Safi has to learn to control her tongue. I loved how all of the characters developed over the course of the book and I couldn’t wait to see what other amazing things that they did. I was surprised to find that Aeduan and Viva were my favorite characters in this book. I got to read from Viva’s perspective, which was a huge eye-opener. I can’t wait to see what great things she does in the future.

Windwitch Quotes

All of the side characters were very realistic and relatable as well. I loved the way that they didn’t just talk about the main characters, but about politics and pirates and food. I was very invested in all of their journeys. The side characters were all very talented in their own ways and I loved how diverse they were. I was very curious about the way that Owl instantly connected with Aeduan, unlike most people who panic when they meet him, with or without the robes and red eyes.

The plot was amazing!!! We got perspectives from Viva, Aeduan, Iseult, Safi, and Merik. I loved that quite a lot, especially Viva’s perspective. Viva was a character that I completely changed my opinion about in this book and cannot wait to read more about in Bloodwitch. I was addicted to the plot of Windwitch and I couldn’t wait to get back to reading my favorite challenges. That was my one problem with this book. There were some plots that I liked more than others and just wanted to dive into. This is normal, but it still makes me feel guilty for not loving all of the plots equally.

This book was amazing and I can’t wait to read Bloodwitch and Sightwitch. I highly recommend anything by Susan Dennard and to watch the Truthwitch TV show once it has aired. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my About page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

Sky In The Deep, by Adrienne Young — September 8, 2018

Sky In The Deep, by Adrienne Young

downloadRaised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan, but when faced with her brother’s betrayal, and driven by a growing love for her brother’s friend Fiske, she attempts to unite the two clans.

This book was amazing!!! I loved how well-written and interesting it was!!! All of the characters were almost perfect and they all changed a lot over the course of the book. The plot was very twisty and I loved how it kept me on my toes. The setting was also pretty good, but the mythology was great!!!

The writing style was somewhat generic and base. I enjoyed it enough but it seemed a bit like most other fantasy novels I’ve read. The storyline was original, it was just that the way she told it wasn’t. I wanted a story that was unique and told it in a different way as well. It wasn’t the writing style was bad, it was just . . . like everything else. I wish it was as different as the story. Everything that needed to be in the story was in it, and then some. So even though the style was unoriginal the book was still good.

The characters were very well-written and unique. They were each beautiful in their own way and so so kind to Eelyn. Iri was the classic kind older brother and I was glad that he didn’t die before the book started. Fiske was great and I loved him so much. Inge and Halavard were the puzzle piece that completed this happy family. They were the perfect people for each other and I am so glad that they found each other and became a family. I loved reading about them so so much!!!!

Sky In The Deep Quotes

My one issue was that there might have been too many characters. I forgot their names and who they were almost instantly. I wish that there had been fewer characters or that the characters in the book were used more. That was my only major problem with the book (besides the writing style), everything else was good.

The mythology in this book was impressive!!! I loved how intricate it was and how intense it sounded. All of the lore was very detailed and it made me way more invested in the story. I wish that there were more myths about the Herja, besides the ones that the Riki and the Aska had.

The plot was very very very well-written. It constantly kept me on my toes and it threw me into fires and off cliffs. Basically, it ripped up my heart into tiny little pieces, burned them, and then scattered them across the mountain range and the fjord where the Riki and the Aska lived. There were so many plot twists that crushed me and then there were so many plot twists that made me want to walk up to someone and give them a hug. If you love books with great plots then this is the book for you.

I really enjoyed this book even though it had its flaws. I recommend this book to all fantasy lovers and people who are obsessed with Vikings. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice And Virtue, by Mackenzie Lee — September 5, 2018

The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice And Virtue, by Mackenzie Lee

9780062382801_p0_v1_s550x406Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven ‘t been able to curb any of his roguish passions – not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men. But as Monty embarks on his Grand Tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end.

I loved this book!!! Everything about it was perfect and so so sweet. The romance was swoon-worthy and the ship was so well written!!!!! I can’t wait for the sequel!!!

Let’s do something crazy and talk about the writing style first. I loved it!!!! Ms. Lee’s style was so light and somewhat carefree. She was able to convey what she needed to with humor and ease. She was able to build up the characters so that I liked them a lot. Even when they were being stupid. I couldn’t help but root for everyone, except the villains. Ms. Lee made the worst of situations hopeful. I could honestly go on an endless rant about Ms. Lee’s writing style.

The characters were the best part of this book. Monty, Percy, and Felicity were one of the best squads ever!!! I really enjoyed their humor and their relationship. Monty and Felicity had one of the best sibling relationships I have read in a while.  It was very realistic and quite funny. Now for the most heart-wrenching part of the book. Monty and Perry’s romance.

The Gentleman's Guide To Vice And Virtue Quotes.jpg

The romance gutted me. I wanted them to get together from page one and they didn’t. Monty would say all the wrong things and I would want to curl into a ball and cry. These guys are just so pure and they deserve a happy ending. I wanted too smack them both on the head and tell them to both get together already. They were so cute together and can’t wait to see where their relationship goes in the next book.

The plot was very well-written. I loved how it constantly kept me on my toes and was always ready to break my heart into a million pieces. Ms. Lee was very skilled at dropping the right information at the right time (is there a word for that)!!! I always needed to know more and be reassured that Monty and Percy would have a happy ending. I needed that. And then there was the ending. It was then I’d ever dreamed of. I can’t wait for the next book to see where the trio’s journey takes them.

I really loved this book and can’t wait for the sequel. I recommend it to everyone who hasn’t read it yet. Go pick it up. Also, on an unrelated note. TRUTHWITCH HAS BEEN OPTIONED FOR TV!!!! Show your support and if you haven’t read Truthwitch then what are you waiting for? Go pick it up now!!!! I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to do my survey.
