In a near-future Toronto where the British Empire never fell, Helena, August, and Margaret are caught off-guard by the discovery of a love so intense they are willing to change the course of the monarchy to keep it.
This book floored me!!! I loved reading it and cannot wait until the sequel comes out. Ms. Johnston’s writing was exceptional and I was engrossed in the story from the first page to the last. All of the characters were very realistic and I felt for them all. I have not read very much steampunk, but this was a great introduction to the genre.
The writing style was very special, but it might just be because I don’t read very much steampunk. I loved the way that Ms. Johnston explained everything and talked in a way that everyone can understand. I loved how Ms. Johnston was very frank and logical, and everything in this book has a reason and is possible. I think that Ms. Johnston could write anything that she wanted to. I loved reading Ms. Johnston’s style. It was a real pallet cleaner. I can’t wait to read the sequel.
The characters were quite practical and I was quite impressed with their logic. Sometimes they made mistakes, but they owned up for them and dealt with the repercussions. I was quite proud of all of them for the way that they reacted to the challenges that faced them. Helena and Margaret were very good friends to each other and I was so happy to see a strong, realistic friendship between girls. Helena and August’s relationship was complicated, but they would have been good together. I hope that all of the characters get the ending that they need.
There was something very cool about how this book talked about being intersex. I thought that the book addressed it very well and the way the characters reacted seemed to be very realistic to me. The way that the character found out using the genetic matchmaking computer was very cool to me. I was impressed with the computer and how the priests became programmers. I was so excited about that and I hope that this future becomes reality. The computer seems to not be an AI, and that disappointed me a lot. I can’t wait to see where Ms. Johnston takes this intricate system in the next novel.
The plot was very intriguing and I the romance was perfect. I don’t like books with romances as much as I like the friend and sibling relationships. The romance was very well written and it wasn’t insta-love!!! That was probably my favorite thing about this book. I loved the plot twists as well. The characters reacted very realistically to them and I was so happy with that. I loved how Ms. Johnston gave us background information. It was something between exposition scenes and background info through dialogue. That Inevitable Victorian Thing was a great read.
I loved reading this book and I can’t wait to read the sequel. I highly recommend this book. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my About page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons
