Mirage, by Somaiya Daud

32768520._SY180_In a world dominated by the brutal Vathek empire, eighteen-year-old Amani is a dreamer. She dreams of what life was like before the occupation; she dreams of writing poetry; she dreams of having adventures, and traveling beyond her isolated home. But when adventure comes for Amani, it is not what she expects: she is kidnapped and brought to the royal palace, where she discovers that she is to become a body double for the hated princess Maram.

This book was very well-written and I enjoyed reading about the characters and plot, just not as much as I’d hoped I would be.

The writing style was amazing and I loved it so much!!! Somaiya Daud’s style was very unique and I really like how Somaiya Daud described the world, but I didn’t really know what genre it was. There were droids, so I thought that it would be a sci-fi, but Mirage had a very fantasy aspect. It was sort of confusing, but I didn’t care that much. It was little things like this that dropped this book from my favorites list. Somaiya’s writing style was very nice and I liked it a lot. I hope that her other books will improve a little bit.

The characters were so realistic!!! Amani was very well-written and I loved reading about her. I also loved the way that she and Maram, the princess, conversed and talked about anything and everything. Their gradual transition from enemies to friends was one of the best female friendships that I’ve read this year. I loved the relationships in this book because they talked about real friendship and consensual relationships. I grew close to the everyone in the book, which made the ending harder than I thought it would be. If you read books for well-written characters than I suggest Mirage.

One of my favorite parts of Mirage was the aspect of religion. It was a good way to talk about Amani’s feelings and what she thought of different people. I really liked the way that everyone seemed to know the religion, but not everyone liked it. In fact, the king tried to ban it! But, that didn’t stop our hero, Amani from devoting herself wholly to it. I respected that, but I wish that sometimes it hadn’t been as big of a deal as it was. But, I did think that it was very interesting to read about.

Mirage Quotes

The plot was not my favorite. It was fairly original, but I didn’t connect with it the way that I wanted to. I understood what was happening, but I didn’t feel very concerned about what was happening. I was never worried about Amani’s safety, just because I knew that she wasn’t going to get seriously hurt. I think that Somaiya Daud will fix this in time, but it just got irritating. I really liked the originality of this book, but I don’t think that it was the best plot that I have ever read. I hope that this changes in time.

This book was not my favorite, but I still enjoyed it. I recommend it to fans of Veronica Roth and other writers like her. I got the summary from Amazon. Remember to fill out my survey. You can see my link to it on my About page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons
