Amani is desperate to leave the dead-end town of Dustwalk, and she’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to help her escape. But after she meets Jin, the mysterious rebel running from the Sultan’s army, she unlocks the powerful truth about the desert nation of Miraji…and herself.
This book was very good. It just didn’t click right away for me. I really wanted it too!!! I just couldn’t relate to anyone until 50 pages in. But once I did I was hooked!!! I couldn’t stop reading!!! The characters were amazing (after those first 50 pages) and I felt like I connected with them on an internal level. If you want to know more of my thoughts then please read on.
The characters were very well written and I could tell that a lot of time and thought had been put into them. And they were funny. Their banter had me in stitches (which was bad because I was in school while reading the book). I think that in the next few books I will come to value these characters and they will grow on me quite a lot. I enjoyed their arcs quite a lot because I saw none of them coming (you can see a character arc coming, they are way harder to predict then plot twists though).
My favorite character was definitely Shazad. She was amazing and I wish that she was a boy so that her mind would be valued. I also wish that I could meet her and then soak up some of her knowledge. Having knowledge of the military and how to fight could be useful. Especially if I decided to join the military. Then I might become a general or something. Shazad was also a great friend to Amani. I wish that I had a friend like her.
The plot was very good. After the first 50 pages that is. The first 50 pages were so slow and dull that I contemplated DNFing it, but I held on and I am so pleased that I did. This book was a joy ride of intensity, action, and scheming. If we wanted to get really honest, I wanted a bit more scheming. It seemed to me, a lot of the time the characters just jumped on something and went. That was all well and good but I wanted more planning. Otherwise, the plot was amazing and I was hooked from page 51.
The setting was very enthralling. Even though I wasn’t hooked on the plot from page 1, the setting transported me to new worlds and I forgot which world I was in, this one or the fictional one. After page 50 I could imagine myself with the characters, actually having fun. Before that, it was pretty boring. There was this great setting but I wasn’t hooked on the plot so I couldn’t enjoy the setting. That made me quite sad. I hope that the next book is better, I think it’s set in the future. But I’m not 100% sure. I hope that the next one is better than this one.
As you can probably see, I really enjoyed this book. Except for that one little thing. I recommend it if you can get past the first 50 pages. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find a link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons
