Muse of Nightmares, by Laini Taylor

download (1)As humans and godspawn reel in the aftermath of the citadel’s near fall, a new foe shatters their fragile hopes, and the mysteries of the Mesarthim are resurrected.

This was an intense book. I was engrossed in it from the beginning and I couldn’t wait to see what had happened to Sari and Lazlo. Laini’s writing style hasn’t changed, and I really liked that. I also enjoyed how realistic the characters were and how all of them reacted to the challenges they faced. The plot was very interesting and I really enjoyed reading it.

Laini’s writing style was very detailed and I loved it so much!!! Laini made her writing dense and thick, but we were never wondering about what things looked like because of it. I do wish that the writing had been a little bit better, but I really don’t mind that much. Laini described things down to the last room in the citadel, and I really liked being to picture everything that vividly. The amount of work that probably went into making the writing that detailed astounds me. I hope that one day I could write that well and detailed.

Lazlo, Sari, Minya, the whole crowd was back and (maybe not better than ever). We are introduced to two new characters in this book, Kora and Nova. I wish that we had been more chapters with them. All of the characters in came together and I enjoyed reading about all of them. I think that my favorite thing character moment in this book was how Sari and Eril-Fane’s relationship progressed. It was so sweet and my heart melted during some scenes. Lazlo and Sari were as solid as ever. But Minya’s relationship with everyone changed drastically. I was floored by the transformation that she underwent and I wish that I could read more about her.

Muse of Nightmares

We were introduced to several new perspectives during this book and I was really interested in how this would change the dynamic of the story.  Surprisingly,  not a lot changed, except for the fact that we got to see inside other characters’ heads. Getting in other characters’ heads helped me understand the story and characters more. The perspectives of the characters freshened up the book and made it more interesting, for me at least. I really enjoyed the different ways that the characters thought and reasoned. It really defined the characters.

The plot was very well-written. I loved how the book was written and how well information was revealed. It was not dramatic, yet it had my jaw on the floor. The plot was very character-based and I loved the way that Laini made the growth of the characters evident. As I said above, the plot was very intense and I loved all of the action. Everything was suspenseful and I enjoyed sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for what was to happen next. The whole plot was very well done and I will be picking up more of Ms. Taylor’s books to see if they are all this good.

I really enjoyed reading Muse of Nightmares and I highly recommend the duology. I got the summary of the book from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my About page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Lani Taylor — May 7, 2018

Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Lani Taylor

download (1)Seventeen-year-old Karou, a lovely, enigmatic art student in a Prague boarding school, carries a sketchbook of hideous, frightening monsters–the chimaerae who form the only family she has ever known.

This book was amazing!!! I really enjoyed it but I think that it was a little slow at the beginning. But that was minor and it was mostly to set up the world building and let you get to know Karou. World building is something that some fantasy stories neglect and instead throw some swoon-worthy romance in your face. If you want to know more reasons why I loved this book then you can read on.

The characters were very well written. By the end of the book, I missed them like they were friends that moved away. This really shows how great the characters are. I hope that they stay that way in the next book. I also really liked their arcs and the realizations that they made about themselves and how they dealt with it. It just seemed really realistic to me. I also loved the girl friendships and the forgiveness factor that was in the book as well. It is always so nice to see girls forgiving and befriending each other instead of always being at each other’s throats.

My favorite character was Zuzana. Karou called her “rabid fairy” because of her fierceness and sass. She is someone that I would want to have my back at school. She also cares for Karou deeply and would probably give her life for her. Now that is unconditional love. I hope that we see more of her in the next books. She is just so amazing and I wish that I could meet her in real life. Mainly because she would love engaging in power struggles with my teachers and I would pay good money to see that.

The plot was very well done and engaging. It kept dropping hints and I always wanted to know more but I wouldn’t figure it out until later in the book. That was sort of annoying but it definitely kept me engaged in the book and wanting to keep reading and not stop until the end. I also think that the plot twists helped. I never saw them coming which was annoying because I like predicting things before they happen. I’m actually not that bad at it. If you read and enjoy with epic plot twists and information dropping that has you hanging on by a thread then this is the book for you.

The setting is captivating. I was lost in the world of Prague and the world of the Seraphim and the chimera. It was amazing!!! Sometimes, I forgot what world I was in and then when I had to go back to the real world I was distraught. The writing style was heavy and I knew everything that I needed to know about the backstory and the world by the time the book was over. I’m sure that there will be more to learn in the next book.

As you can see, this book was amazing and I highly recommend it. The book’s summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

Strange the Dreamer, by Laini Taylor — January 19, 2018

Strange the Dreamer, by Laini Taylor

download (1)War orphan and junior librarian Lazlo Strange gets an unexpected opportunity to follow his dream of seeking the mythic lost city of Weep with the Godslayer and his band of legendary warriors.

This book was a mystery. If I had thought that The Cruel Prince had a lot of plot twists then this book had ten times more. It was epic!!!! There was lots of questioning about a characters intentions and it was awesome. I think that it could have been done a little bit better though. I also think that the concept and main idea were really cool. Want to know what else I felt? Then read on.

The characters were really cool. Their motives were always changing and it was really realistic. After all, things do happen that change people’s perspective on things. The characters had time to laugh and then plan their next actions. It was really awesome. There was also the normal girl envy (there was only one guy on the citadel). It was very real.

My favorite character was Calixite. She was such a fun character. Her ideas were always bright and full of life. It was awesome. She was really strong and different. She was the only who cared about Laklo during the trip to Weep. She also was the only one of the group to have gotten arrested and laugh about it. So I really like her. She is someone that I would love to meet in real life.

The characters were also really diverse. Everyone was different, in their professions, or the color of their skin, or how they see the world. It was really amazing. And then all of these different people came together to talk about how to do something important to them. It was really very impressive. Honestly, I really enjoyed the characters and how the reacted to the world around them.

The plot was very interesting. I enjoyed how dark it was. There was very little hope in it. I know that I’m probably evil for saying this but, I liked that. The fact that the characters accepted their fate was really cool. At least, it was to me. And the way that everything was told was masterful. You never knew what secret was going to be unveiled next. All of the twists and turns were very interesting and I did not see any of them coming. Real talent.

The setting was also very interesting. Weep was a very interesting city with an interesting past. It was healing and you could see that. You could also see what state Weep would be in if it was fixed and everyone was happy. It was very impressive. I really wish that I lived there. Not when all the trauma and sadness was happening but when everything was happy and everyone was at peace with the world. I also would have loved to visit the Library. After all, it was the greatest library of all time. I want to freaking live there. So if you can find a way to transport me into a book that would be wonderful and I would pay you all the money that I have.

I really did love this book. I think that it was very good even though the plot could have had a bit more depth to it. I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good fantasy.
