Shadow and Bone, by Leigh Bardugo

downloadOrphaned by the Border Wars, Alina Starkov is taken from obscurity and her only friend, Mal, to become the protegé of the mysterious Darkling, who trains her to join the magical elite in the belief that she is the Sun Summoner, who can destroy the monsters of the Fold.

This book was amazing!! I have no words for it. Leigh Bardugo is the queen of fantasy right now. The characters were amazing and I don’t know whether to love or hate the Darkling (secretly he needs to have a redemption arc and beg forgiveness from Alina, whereupon she will reject him and eventually defeat him after a long battle). If you want to hear more of my thoughts then you should keep reading.

The characters were magical!!! They were all so complex and talented in their own way!! I would kill to meet them and at the same time back out of the contest because I don’t know how likely I am to survive the encounter. I think that all of the characters were really developed and talented. All of them were really unique and I can’t wait to read the next book just to know what happened to them.

My favorite character was Alina (when I started the book I was thinking it would be Darkling and how much I would talk about wanting him to be my future husband . . . not now). She was so empowering and strong-willed. Honestly, if she was running for president, I would vote for her. I loved how unique she was, she didn’t do something just because someone else wanted it, she did it because she wanted it. I love how Alina befriends people and how grumpy she is, she reminds me of Nina Zenyik in Six of Crows.

The plot was amazing!!! I was constantly kept on my toes and couldn’t wait to see what happened next (except in some instances). At some points, I just broke down and couldn’t read anymore. The worst part was that most of these times were when I was at school and didn’t have anything else to do. I could tell that Leigh Bardugo was a debut author but her writing style was still very prominent then. But what I loved the most about this book was the effort and dedication that went into it. You could see how much Ms. Bardugo loved this book and how much of herself she put into it. If I ever publish a book, then I want people to notice something like that.

The setting was familiar yet different. I have read books set in the world of the Grisha before (Six of Crows) meaning that I had met some of the characters before I read this book and accidentally got spoiled as to what would happen in the ending (if you read Crooked Kingdom closely enough you’ll figure it out). The setting was very descriptive, but I wish that the backstory was more detailed. Honestly, the setting was probably the worst part of the book but it was really well written for a debut novel.

This book was amazing!!! Thank you to Angelica at Dreaming of Fiction for pushing me to read this. I probably would’ve gotten around to it a lot later than I did. If you haven’t followed her blog then get over there and do it. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find a link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee

Crooked Kingdom, by Leigh Bardugo — December 23, 2017

Crooked Kingdom, by Leigh Bardugo

download (1)Kaz Brekker and his crew have just pulled off a heist so daring that even they didn’t think they’d survive. But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they’re right back to fighting for their lives. Double – crossed and left crippled by the loss of a valuable team member, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope. As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug called jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz’s cunning and the team’s fragile loyalties. A war will be waged on the city’s dark and twisting streets – a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of the Grisha world.

How do I describe this book? Depressing. Amazing. Beautiful. Really, Really Funny. Diverse. I could go on and on. This book broke me. Why did ———– have to die? I know that it had to happen but still. The writing was just as good as the last book. Sometimes I had to get up and pace and hope that everyone was okay when I got back down to reading the book. That is one of the things I admire in an author. Leigh Bardugo has my undying respect.

The characters broke my heart. While reading this book I was imagining what would happen if Rhys and his Inner Circle (ACOTAR) and the Dregs met. That would be very interesting. I really enjoyed Wylan and Jesper’s relationship. I totally predicted that it would happen. I love how diverse this book is. Everyone is different in here. Nothing really matters in Ketterdam besides money. We also learned a bit more about everyone’s backstories and that interested me a lot. Learning more about the Dregs and everyone’s history helped me understand everything a lot more. Who knew that I would ever feel pity for Kaz Brekker. I also felt very bad for Nina at various parts in the story (including that unnamed death that happened). I liked Matthias the best in this book. It was evident that he really cared and he did not deserve what happened to him (despite what certain people think). If you do not like character deaths then this book is not for you.

The plot was very interesting. The plan was always changing and it was very fast – paced. The fast pacing works for this book very well. The multiple POVs worked very well for this book. Especially because for part of the time Inej was separated from the Dregs. I liked how the book ended the way it did because it lets you imagine how things will end up. Will there be another book in this series? That is the one question I want answered. Because if there is I want to know everything. Now. The setting was very clear and descriptive. And probably pretty realistic too. I wouldn’t know because I don’t live in the city. I imagined myself walking around Ketterdam with the Dregs and when I can imagine myself somewhere in a book I know that the setting is written well. I loved this book for everything that it is.

If you have not picked up this book or the first book in the series, Six of Crows, you really should. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!!! Have a Great Day!!!! -Annalee and Buttons

Can they both get what they want?Design O

I loved this book so much!!!! It made so much sense to me. I mean I expected to see Diana and her friends walking down the street. This book was super descriptive. I could envision everything. Will there be a second book? I need to know. I cannot wait for it if there is. But lets quit with my rambling and get book talking!!!!

I loved the characters. They were so diverse. I mean like look at them!!!!

See? I told you so. Look at how empowering these quotes are. I think I liked Nim the most. I could relate to her the most. I mean I could relate to all of them but I understood Nim the most. I felt like she was the one who would probably have a blog.  I liked Diana’s quote the most.  Only a real hero would say something like that. Theo’s quote was pretty good too. I didn’t like Jason at all. I mean really people. I won’t say anything because some people have not read this book. All the characters were really diverse and realistic. I felt like I could be walking down the street and meet one of the and not know that they were some of my favorite characters in a book. I loved the characters a lot. They were super diverse and realistic. But now for the plot.

The plot was really cool. It was the best idea ever. I can’t wait for the next book in the DC Icons series. Batman: Nightstalker. I think that’s what it’s called anyway. And. The best part. Is that this book is going to be written by Marie Lu. I am so happy. The plot was very suspenseful and I was chewing my nails while reading this book. The way the author threw in all those other gods was really cool. I want another story about them. The book just drew me in and didn’t spit me out until the last page. Has there been a Wonder Woman book before this one? If there has please tell me so that I can read it. I want to read another Wonder Woman book. Please tell me there is another Wonder Woman book coming out from Leigh Bardugo. I need to know. I think that everyone should read this book. If you have not you should. Please. Read this book and tell me how you felt about it.
